American Children's Fiction of World War II and the Dissensual Bildungsroman (Anna Kurian)

This essay examines three children’s literature texts set in World War II America (Bette Greene’s Summer of My German Soldier, Mary Downing Hahn’s Stepping on the Cracks and Janet Taylor Lisle’s The Art of Keeping Cool), analyzing the representations of family life and growing up within the texts. Beginning with an analysis of the family I then demonstrate the heroic nature of the protagonists in the face of their adverse familial and social circumstances. The essay therefore moves from contexts – families, communities, social structures – to individuals, tracing the growing-up of the protagonists. I conclude by arguing that these books are all instances of the dissensual bildungsroman.
